Is It Fear or Intuition? How to Tell the Difference

One of the most common questions I am asked is this: how do I know if it is intuition or just fear? It is a beautiful question.

Why it matters

We all have two voices running at the same time.

One is the voice of fear. It is loud, insistent, and very good at disguising itself as wisdom. It speaks in worst-case scenarios. It catastrophizes. It tells you all the reasons why something could go wrong, why you are not ready, why now is not the time.

The other is the voice of intuition. It is quieter, more grounded, it does not argue or repeat itself endlessly, it simply knows and then waits for you to catch up.

The trouble is that both voices can feel urgent, both can feel real and when we have spent years learning to override our inner knowing, the two can become genuinely difficult to distinguish.

Here is how to start telling them apart.

1. Notice the quality of the feeling

Fear tends to feel contracted. There is a tightening in the chest area, in the stomach, in the throat. The body braces, as though preparing for something bad to happen. The mind speeds up, thoughts sprial, one worry leads to another, and then another.

Intuition feels different. Even when it is pointing toward something difficult or unfamiliar, there is often a quality of openness to it, an expansion rather than a contraction, a steadiness rather than a spiral. The body may feel a quiet warmth, a sense of rightness, or butterflies in the stomach that feel more like excitement than dread.

The question to ask yourself is: does this feeling contract me or expand me?

2. Listen for repetition versus persistence

Fear repeats itself. It comes back again and again, louder each time, generating more and more reasons to support itself. It needs to convince you.

Intuition persists quietly. It does not argue its case. It does not raise its voice. It simply continues to be there as the same feeling, the same knowing whether you pay attention to it or not. It does not need to convince you of anything. It already knows.

If the inner voice is getting louder and more frantic, it is likely fear. If it is staying calm and consistent, it is likely intuition.

3. Ask where it is coming from

Fear almost always comes from the past or the future. It is replaying something that happened before, or it is imagining something that might happen next. It rarely lives in the present moment.

Intuition lives in the now. It is a response to what is actually here, actually real, actually happening. It is not a projection or a memory. It is a direct perception.

When you notice an inner voice arising, ask yourself: is this about now, or is this about the past or future? That question alone can be surprisingly clarifying.

4. Notice what happens when you sit with it

Fear, when you stay with it and breathe into it, often softens or shifts. It has energy that needs to move. When you bring presence to it, without running from it or feeding it, it tends to loosen its grip. It reveals itself as a feeling, not a fact.

Intuition, when you sit with it, tends to deepen. It becomes more clear, not less. The more presence you bring to it, the more certain it feels. It does not dissolve under attention, it clarifies.

5. Check in with the body, not just the mind

This is perhaps the most important point. Fear and intuition both live in the body but they live in different places and in different ways.

Fear tends to live in the upper chest, the throat, the solar plexus. It can feel like constriction, like holding the breath, like a weight.

Intuition often lives deeper, in the heart centre, in the gut, in what some people describe as their core. It can feel like a pull, a warmth, a quiet certainty that sits beneath the noise of the mind.

Learning to read your own body's language is one of the most powerful things you can do. The body is always communicating. It is simply a matter of learning to listen.

What if you still cannot tell?

Sometimes the two are genuinely entangled and that is okay. Fear and intuition are not always in opposition. Sometimes fear arises precisely because the intuitive knowing is pointing toward something that matters deeply, something that would require real courage to follow.

In those moments, the question is not which one is right. The question is: what would I do if I were not afraid?

Often, the answer to that question is the intuition speaking.

When subconscious beliefs get in the way

One of the most common reasons people struggle to trust their intuition is not that the signal is unclear, it is that there are subconscious beliefs running underneath that make it feel unsafe to follow it.

Beliefs like: I always make the wrong choice. My judgment cannot be trusted. If I follow what I want, something bad will happen.

These programs do not just create noise, they actively interfere with the channel between you and your own knowing. They make fear feel like wisdom, and wisdom feel like risk.

This is exactly what ThetaHealing® works with. In a session, we identify the specific beliefs blocking your self-trust and replace them with something that actually serves you. Many people notice an immediate shift in how clearly they begin to receive and trust their own inner guidance after this kind of work.

The practice

Telling the difference between fear and intuition is not a skill you learn once and then have forever. It is a practice, a relationship you build with yourself over time.

Start small, notice the voices, get curious about them rather than immediately acting on or suppressing them, ask questions and heck in with your body.

And little by little, the voice that actually knows will become easier and easier to hear.

Would you like support in clearing what is blocking your self-trust?

A ThetaHealing® session can help you identify and release the subconscious beliefs that are making it hard to hear your own inner knowing. I offer a complimentary 30-minute consultation to start, no pressure, no obligation. Sessions are conducted online, or locally in Montreal (for now).
